Businesswoman donates Internet addresses to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (AP) — A Williamsburg businesswomen has donated two Internet domain names to the College of William & Mary.

Gilinda Rogers, who registers and takes control of domain names for Virginia institutions, donated www.williamandmary.com and www.williamandmarycollege.com to the school. Rogers said the value of at least one of the names has been estimated to be worth up to $120,000.

William & Mary has made a point in recent years of registering domain names that would logically point to the school, and now controls about 30 such names, a school spokesman said.

Rogers said she is interested in the welfare of institutions related to the domain names that she controls.

But she wound up in federal court with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in a dispute over two domain names related to institution. Ultimately, the foundation got control of the domain names.

Rogers said she began registering locally important domain names after learning that people from out-of-state controlled such domains as williamsburg.com, yorktown.com and jamestown.com.
